Having worked at HMRC previously, I am able to give advice and real insight into the workings of HMRC.

Since joining Botham Accounting I have enjoyed working with the rest of the team on both our tax compliance but also helping our clients to recover tax overpaid and getting involved in some innovative opportunities to structure our client’s tax affairs in the most efficient way.

I worked at HMRC for 11 years. My work at HMRC included work on individuals and SME’s before moving into Large Business Services as a Corporation Tax specialist working with FTSE 250 companies within the construction, transport and alcohol sectors. This also included working as a specialist on international issues.

During my time in Specialist Investigations I dealt with complex tax returns including both onshore and overseas tax issues, under HMRC’s Code of Practice 8 and cases of possible fraud under Code of Practice 9. I also worked on the Lichtenstein Disclosure Facility (LDF).

I also led a team working on HMRC challenge to mass marketed avoidance, focussing on sideways loss relief and contractor loans.

Restructuring – I head up the tax side of our transaction services work which involves managing the corporate restructures, reorganisations, mergers, acquisitions and disposals. Providing tax specific advice on the transactions involved but assisting with how this will impact our businesses.

Tax Planning – I help clients consider the tax implications of drawings from companies and structure these accordingly. Whether it is our corporate or personal clients we help to make sure they are utilising the tax reliefs available such as Capital Allowances, Research & Development Allowances, interest reliefs and pension contributions.

Consultancy – I provide advice and consultancy on various tax issues that come up, from specific questions about certain transactions, to identifying tax problems with business models, to risk assessing avoidance scheme used and Accelerated Payment Notices.  These cover all taxes including Corporation Tax, Income Tax, VAT, Stamp Duty Land Tax, Construction Industry Scheme and National Insurance, both from a technical position and a procedural position.

Corporation and Personal Tax – As part of the compliance work that I undertake, I review and submit personal tax returns, P11Ds and corporation tax returns. I also deal with any HMRC enquiries or claims that need to be made. I am also able to assist with debt structuring and negotiating payment terms with HMRC.
